Today I went to the Twins game with an old friend of mine. I met Dan K back in college when he was the president of the fraternity and I was the treasurer. We had a lot of good times back then. We both graduated on the same day and went our own directions. A couple months ago I spotted him on LinkedIn and sent him a message. Turns out he was back in MN after moving around the country. Since Caden had baseball just about every weekend until recently, we were unable to get together until today. Back in college, on a Wednesday night and on a whim, I skipped night class and Dan and I headed to the Twins game. Afterwards we went out by where the players went to their cars and waited. As luck would have it, Dave Winfield stopped and signed a baseball for each of us. Fast forward a couple years ago and I donated mine for a fundraiser. Well, today Dan decided I would appreciate his more than him so he gave it to me. Man, we had fun on that Wednesday night as well as today. Good times.
Wade’n Through The Mail
Today was a great mail day! I got in only one package but it was a good one! Last week I sent Wade Boggs the two Sports Illustrated magazines he was on the cover of and a check for $40 to All Children’s Hospital and today they were returned signed! One was signed with HOF 05. He even used the marker I provided. Great additions to the collection!
Pass The Buck!
I love getting the mail on Mondays. It usually yields a package or two and today was no different. While I did not receive exactly what I was after, at least both people were kind enough to sign the baseballs and return them.
The first package I opened was a baseball signed by Rich Rollins. A friend of mine is working on getting me a ticket to the 1962 Twins game when the Twins hit two grand slams in the same inning. I started looking into that event and found that everyone involved has passed away except for Rich Rollins who scored in both slams. I sent a Story Ball request to him asking what he remembered. It was neat to read his memories about it.
The second package was a request I sent to Joe Buck a while ago asking for his 2004 call of the final out of the first Red Sox World Championship. Unfortunately, he just signed his name. Kinda missed the purpose of me sending it (for his call).
Justice Is Served!
Today’s mail brought a signed David Justice Sports Illustrated magazine. Scott Smith, the SI King, went to Lake Tahoe for Michael Jordan’s golf tournament. He offered to get a number of people’s autographs on a consignment basis. I sent in my Justice regional issue and got it back today signed perfectly.
What is neat about this issue is that it is one of four regional issues released that week for SI. It was one per each of the four teams playing in the LCS for each league. I already had Shane Spencer (Yankees), John Smoltz (Braves) and Greg Vaughn (Padres) and only needed the Braves Justice. I now have all four newsstand issues signed!
