Yankees Luncheon Haul
Every year the Yankees have a luncheon during spring training to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa and all the players, except that day’s starter, must attend and sign autographs. Over the past couple years, the two most difficult autograph signers to obtain has arguably been Anthony Gose and Masahiro Tanaka. It is widely known that Tanaka only signs at the Luncheon and avoids signing otherwise. Unfortunately for Sports Illustrated collectors, Tanaka was on a regional issue as part of the 2014 Baseball Preview. I had an issue and figured I would never get it signed. A couple weeks before the luncheon, I received a message via SCN from Joshua S (jslaw) that he was going and was seeing if I was interested in anyone. He offered a fair price for Tanaka and others so I jumped at the chance. He has taken REALLY GOOD care of me over the years during spring training and the Marlins season and is one of just a handful of guys I totally trust with getting me autographs. I sent him a few things and hoped Tanaka would not be that day’s starter.
I received a message after the event to send my email address to Joshua so he could send me a pic of what he got. He came through big time. I was pumped. Today I picked up the package as it was insured and I had to sign for it. In it was the following items all beautifully signed exactly where and how I would have liked it.
Masahiro Tanaka 04.24.2014 Sports Illustrated
Alex Rodriguez 02.16.2009 Sports Illustrated
Jacoby Ellsbury 03.31.2008 Sports Illustrated (now signed by four of the six cover guys)
Mark Teixeira ML Debut ticket with “MLB Debut”
Nathan Eovaldi SS baseball
I cannot express in this post how excited I am to have a Tanaka autograph in the collection. Maybe next year I can add a baseball! THANK YOU JOSHUA for all you do for me and my collection!
Some MLB Royally Safe At Home
Today I received a three packages with one from MLBPA, one from a retired umpire, and one surprise from a friend who got some stuff signed at Royals Fanfest. The first was for exchanging the sub-par Joey Gallo from my purchase from the MLBPA. I sent it back, plus a few bucks, for: CJ Cron, Justin Morneau and Hunter Harvey. The Morneau ball has 33 on it and would you believe I have just about every version except with 33 until now. I have a couple with his middle name (Ernest), 27, MVP and not one, until now, with 33.
Another package was the second Sports Illustrated I sent to Mike Reilly after he ok’d sending it after the first one. I am pretty excited to have two of those issues completed with two hall of famers and the umpire! The surprise package came from my friend Kent B (doggle3 on SCN). Kent got me three Sports Illustrated magazines signed at Royals Fanfest and sent me two of them (the third he is going to try to get Hunter Pence on it in spring training). The two he sent me were Eric Hosmer on the 10.13.2014 issue and the other was Greg Holland on the 10.27.2014 issue. They look AWESOME!
I also received a dozen baseballs I ordered. I usually get 4-6 dozen per purchase but I was waiting for the new Rob Manfred version to come out. They are not out yet but I was out of baseballs and it is spring training time so I had to get something! Today was a nice mail day!
All Betts Are Off
Today I received my package from Steve S (cosmo on SCN) from the Red Sox Winterfest. I had mailed him a few things to get signed but from everything I read, the operation of the Winterfest was a mess. Steve did manage to get me a ML Debut ticket signed by Mookie Betts though. We had agreed on a price and everything to get it signed but Steve said I did not have to pay. I am sending him some cards I got signed at Twinsfest last week as thanks.
