Hawk

Today was a fun day to receive a pair of Sports Illustrated magazines from 1983 signed by Andre Dawson. Years ago I had gotten a pair of these signed by Hawk at a show. Both in black Sharpie. When I first started sending requests via the mail, I sent one to an address I thought was for Dave Stieb and never received it back. I found out later that the address I sent it to was to someone else who was purporting to be Stieb so that person enjoyed my SI, marker and donation. I kept the other one I had until Mr Stieb had a private signing. He eventually did and I sent in the remaining SI as well as three others and received them back signed beautifully. Today I received two of those signed by Mr Dawson. Andre has a beautiful signature and inked these up real nice. I will eventually send the remaining one to him but not for a while. Andre now owns a funeral home, yep, a funeral home, in Miami. Interesting career change!

A Dream Come True

Anyone who knows me knows that “Field of Dreams” is my most favorite movie of all time. I have probably seen it thirty times and just in the last year or so I no longer have tears at the end of it. My most favorite quote in the move is “Hey Dad. Wanna have a catch?” It gets me every time. Well, I noticed the actor who plays the young John Kinsella in that scene, Dwier Brown, offers signed baseballs on his website. I decided to pull the trigger and buy one of the move quote baseballs and it arrived today. Dwier also included a card that said “Hey Kevin- Wanna have a catch?” The quotes on the ball are “Iowa? I could’ve sworn this was heaven.”, “If you build it… he will come.”, “Ease his pain”, and “Wanna have a catch?” I have a baseball signed by James Earl Jones in my collection already so this is the perfect mate for that ball.
I also received a pair of Julio Rodriguez baseballs I bought from Mill Creek Sports today. Rodriguez is one of the top rated prospects in MLB.

Mega ‘Zine Day!

A while ago I purchased a card from Lance D and it went real well. A few days ago someone posted a comment about finding someone who could get a signing together with Troy Tulowitzki and I mentioned I had three Sports Illustrated magazines I needed Troy to sign. Lance noticed that post and reached out to me letting me know he had a couple Tulo SI’s signed and if I would be interested in them as he is in the process of downsizing his collection. I took a look and his collection is of the same quality as mine (ie blue Sharpie autographs on mint no label issues) so I was real excited to work out a deal with him for those I needed. Today I received them and am very pleased! They are:
04.27.1981 – Steve McCatty – (I have one signed by Mike Norris- This is a tough issue to get autographs of any of the five players on the cover!)
11.02.1992 – Pat Tabler/Pat Borders/Alfredo Griffen/Derek Bell/Pat Hentgen – (I have a couple issues in various stages of player signatures but none this complete or with any of these players! Too bad I could not combine the two and have one complete issue!)
06.18.2007 – Orlando Hernandez/Oliver Perez/Endy Chavez – (I have a couple with just Chavez)
05.05.2008 – Kosuke Fukudome – (I had one of these and never thought I would get it signed) with JSA
10.31.2011 – Yorvit Torrealba and Jon Jay – (I had one with just Jay’s signature)
06.02.2014 – Troy Tulowitzki – (I had two of these regional issues unsigned) with JSA
The cool part is that Willie Randolph is doing a signing in a couple weeks and I already have the 2007 issue packaged up and ready to send to that signing!
What a fun package of magazines!
