Thanks Gaylord!

Today I received a rather odd package.  Last week I received a pair of magazines that I had mailed to Gaylord Perry with his fee.  The magazines were not signed at all and my cash was not returned.  However, someone wrote “O.K.  Baseball is great!” on my note.  It made no sense to me and I was disappointed.  Well, today I received a priority mail envelope and inside was a jersey that was signed by Gaylord Perry with HOF inscription.  I am a bit unsure still on what to make of it.  It was intentionally sent to me as someone hand wrote my address on the label and Gaylord’s address in the return spot.  I do not collect jerseys but this was a pretty interesting thing to happen to me.

The Murph

Today I was able to pick up what was a tradition for my friend Rob M and I going back to the Metrodome days.  On a Friday during Lent, I would swing by McDonald’s on my way to spending lunch at the ballpark with Rob and pick up fish sandwiches.  We would go to a suite and hang out and chat about our families and baseball.  Because I was so busy the last few years at work, I made it a point to make it happen this year and today was the day.
It was neat to spend time at the ballpark and especially with Rob.  Looking out of the suite at the field, I could see the outfield grass getting mowed.  How cool is that?
After lunch, I was able to check out the new Bat & Barrel area (formerly Metropolitan Club) and the realignment of the area by Gate 29 where they removed a few rows of seats and made the concourse wider.  It really looked great!
On my way out, Rob gave me a bag with a couple Twins swag items.  Inside was a baseball signed by John Ryan Murphy.  I did not have one signed by him so this was a great addition to the collection.
Thanks for the goodies but more important the time hanging out Rob!

Danny Thompson, What a Shame

Wow!  What a package I received today!  My friend Kyle S (esiason14 from SCN) sent me a PSA/DNA authenticated 1975 Danny Thompson card signed in blue sharpie.  It looks awesome.  It was one of my final two cards I needed from the 1975 Topps Twins set.  What a phenomenal gesture!  THANK YOU Kyle!

You might wonder why I titled this “Danny Thompson, What a Shame”.  Back in the mid-1980’s the Twins had a give away where they gave away a 45 record that had the “Gopher Rouser” on one side and a couple Twins songs on the other.  Of course there was the “Win Twins” song but the other song was Terry Cashman’s “Talkin’ Baseball” Twins version.  I had never heard the Twins version before and listened to it over and over on my parent’s old record player.  I learned a pair of things from that song… I learned that Jack Kralik had a no hitter and there was something about Danny Thompson that I had to learn about.  The lyrics were something like “Kralik had a no hit game.  Danny Thompson, what a shame.”  This was before google so I had to look it up in a couple Twins almanac type books I had.  I learned that Danny passed away in a truly sad manner, succumbing to leukemia.

This is my very first Danny Thompson autographed card for my collection.  Thanks again Kyle!
